Track Overview Seven dam tour

Seven dam tour

Beautiful mountainbike route starting in Altenau along historical places in the Oberharz, scenic mountain meadows and seven lakes: The route starts with a short climb with a view of the town Altenau. The tour continues with a slight incline on a track on which a railway line ran between Langelsheim and Altenau until 1972. Several historical bridge structures are crossed. Once at the top, the tour leads along ponds and canals of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Oberharzer Wasserregal' through dark green forests and along mountain meadows in the Oberhharz. A highlight of the tour is the Sperbehaier dam. The dam is an aqueduct built in the 18th century and was used to transport water for the mining industry from one of the largest canals in the Harz over a valley to the plateau around Clausthal-Zellerfeld. After crossing the dam, the route leads down a valley back to Altenau. There are many opportunities for a break as well as an opportunity to stop for lunch on the tour.
