Mountainbiking in Altenau
Altenau is located in a small valley in the center of the Oberharz and is not far away from the Hochharz. Altenau can be recommended to mountainbikers as a starting point for MTB tours: It is possible to start tours in all directions from Altenau and also to go up the Brocken by mountainbike. The dark green mountain slopes of the Hochharz form an impressive background to the east. In the other direction there is a large area with many varied trails in the Oberharz and the water reservoir Oker-Talsperre. A little away from Altenau there is also the bikepark in Schulenberg, which is very popular in the downhill scene. The landscape in the area around Altenau is characterized by the dark green forests of the Harz, the UNESCO World Heritage 'Oberharzer Wasserregal' and large quarries.
